The new Phenoms lack memory read performance simply because of the drop in memory controller frequency. On a clock to clock comparison, the 2.6GHz/2.0GHz Phenom II is 400MB/s faster than the Phenom X4 9950, but the Phenom II 940 at 3.0GHz basically just matches the 9950 at 2.6GHz, though. It's a shame AMD decided to drop the memory controller performance.

In terms of DDR2 performance, AMD's CPUs at 1,066MHz are still faster than the majority of Intel's offerings, and it will be interesting to see what extra raw bandwidth AMD can squeeze out of its AM3 CPUs with DDR3.

Everest's single threaded write performance is disappointing here still, but the latest Phenom II CPUs are significantly faster than the older Phenoms by 20 percent for the fastest CPUs in each family. Intel CPUs with high front side bus performance still rule the roost here, and its Core i7 CPUs with a similar direct connect approach to AMD hit twice the bandwidth potential but with three channels of DDR3 versus two of DDR2.

Phenom II's raw copy performance is better than most, even though we were using ganged dual channel mode rather than two single channels. The clock to clock performance between both generations sees a large improvement of 14.5 percent, however the extra core frequency now offsets the drop in memory controller clock instead and it almost makes up the difference for the 940.

The latency performance between both generations of Phenoms is about the same though - there's very little difference here as both run at 1,066MHz 5-5-5-15-2T.
